[AlertDC] The District Department of Transportation (DDOT), in coordination with the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA), will implement a new traffic configuration on eastbound Maine Avenue SW as part of construction activities for the Long Bridge Project.
Beginning as early as June 18, 2026, traffic on eastbound Maine Avenue SW between Ohio Drive SW and the Washington Marina parking lot will be shifted into an interim configuration to allow crews to work in the median. This new configuration of Maine Avenue SW is anticipated to remain in place until approximately August 2026. The 14th Street SW ramp from northbound 14th Street SW to eastbound Maine Avenue SW will remain closed until early 2028.
The eastbound Maine Avenue SW traffic shift will:
• Close and detour the 14th Street SW ramp to Maine Avenue SW
• Maintain one travel lane in the eastbound direction
• Maintain two travel lanes in the westbound direction
• Maintain the pedestrian walkway eastbound
14th Street SW Ramp Closure Detour Route:
• Motorists follow I-395 north (follow signs for Capitol Hill / Nationals Park / Verizon Center)
• Take exit 4 toward Maine Avenue SW / SW Waterfront / Nationals Park
• Take a slight left onto the ramp to 9th Street SW towards the traffic signal at Maine Avenue SW
Construction activities and timeframes are weather permitting. Motorists are encouraged to allow additional travel time and follow all posted detour and traffic-control signage in the area. Traffic-control devices will be in place to safely guide motorists, pedestrians, and other roadway users around the work zone.
Motorists should expect delays when traveling through the work zone and are advised to use caution near road work crews and equipment.
Long Bridge Project
The Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s Long Bridge Project is a 1.8-mile rail improvement that will relieve one of the biggest rail bottlenecks on the East Coast. The project will improve reliability and expand capacity for both passenger and freight trains traveling between Virginia and Washington, DC. The project will create a continuous four-track corridor between the Long Bridge Aquatic Center in Arlington County, Virginia, and L’Enfant Plaza in Washington DC. It includes five new rail bridges and two new pedestrian/ bicycle bridges. A new two-track rail bridge will be built over the Potomac River next to the existing two-track Long Bridge, along with a new bike and pedestrian bridge connecting Long Bridge Park and the Mount Vernon Trail in Arlington to East Potomac Park in DC.
The Long Bridge Project is one of the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority’s many rail projects across the Commonwealth. Learn more at: www.vapassengerrailauthority.org.
