[AlertDC] DDOT Traffic Advisory: Connecticut Avenue Deckover Work Begins 9/23
[AlertDC] The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin construction of the deckover at Dupont Circle on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, as part of the Connecticut Avenue Streetscape and Deckover Project, weather permitting. The new deckover will transform the space above the Connecticut Avenue underpass into a vibrant public plaza designed for strolling, relaxing, outdoor dining, working, and hosting community events. This project will enhance pedestrian connections, create new opportunities for public art and cultural programming, and add green space in one of DC’s most iconic neighborhoods. In order for the crews to work safely and efficiently work in both the tunnels below and the streetscape above, the service lanes on Connecticut Avenue NW will be closed in both directions between Q Street NW and Dupont Circle. These closures will remain in place for the duration of the project. Construction is anticipated to take approximately two years to complete. Work on the streetscape portion of the project began earlier this summer. Businesses in the area will remain open throughout construction. Pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses, residences, and amenities in the work zone. Vehicular Detour Information for Service Road Closures: • For vehicles traveling and using the southbound or northbound lanes traveling under the circle will be in service and uninterrupted, with one lane open in both directions. •Vehicles using Dupont Circle and heading northbound will be detoured via New Hampshire Avenue NW or using 19th Street NW to Q Street NW. • Vehicles using southbound Connecticut Avenue traffic heading to travel within Dupont Circle will be detoured at Q Street NW via 19th Street NW to the Circle. • Access to local streets will be maintained; drivers should follow posted signage for specific turn allowances. • 19th Street between R and Q Streets will be one-way southbound only. • On Sundays, during the operation of the Dupont Circle Farmer’s Market, 20th Street from Connecticut Avenue to Massachusetts Avenue will be closed to all vehicular traffic. Traffic will be detoured using Q Street and 19th Street detour pathways. • Dupont Underground is open and accessible at all times at its 19th Street entrance. Truck and Bus Detour Information: • Truck detours will be well marked, and drivers are advised to follow signage to avoid the construction area. • Metro Bus lines along this corridor will have minor detours and some stop closures as the detour phases are put in place. Riders are advised to monitor WMATA notices and messaging https://www.wmata.com/service/bus/. Motorists are advised to: • Expect minor delays and plan alternate routes. • Use public transit, biking, or walking, when possible. • Follow all posted detour and construction signage. • DDOT thanks the public for its patience during this infrastructure improvement project.
