The National Weather Service reports a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in affect until 5 pm for the Northeastern section of The District of Columbia. HAZARD: 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. IMPACT.: Damaging winds will cause some trees and large branches to fall. This could injure those outdoors, as well as damage homes and vehicles. Roadways may become blocked by downed trees. Localized power outages are possible. Unsecured light objects may become projectiles.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reports the temperature is 89 degrees, with heat index of 95 degrees. The District of Columbia activates its Heat Emergency Plan when the heat index in DC reaches 95 degrees. A list of District cooling center locations is available at heat.dc.gov. Extreme heat is dangerous and can cause illnesses and death. As temperatures rise, you are encouraged to take an active role in your safety and take action to stay cool. • Stay indoors: find places in the shade or with air conditioning. Visit a District cooling center. • Do not leave children or pets in vehicles: vehicles can reach dangerous temperatures within 10 minutes. • Drink plenty of fluids: increase your fluid intake but don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine, or large amounts of sugar. • Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen: pick lightweight, loose fitting, light-colored clothing, and wide brimmed hats. SPF 15 or higher sunscreen is best. • Check on your neighbors: young children, the elderly, and those with access and functional needs are the most vulnerable in our community. • Pet owners should keep pets indoors, walk pets early in the morning, and give pets plenty of water. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the District of Columbia, which is in effect from 2PM this afternoon through 10PM this evening. Numerous to widespread showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and this evening in a very warm and humid environment. There is potential for showers to move repeatedly over the same areas and to produce intense rainfall rates in a short period of time that may lead to flash flooding. Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation. You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
