The District Government Cold Emergency Plan will remain in effect until 8AM Tuesday, January 22, 2019. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the current temperature is 15 degrees with a wind chill of -1 degrees. Tonight’s forecast is clear, with a low around 15 degrees and a wind chill of -3 degrees. Northwest winds of 7-14 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. The District activates the Cold Emergency plan when the temperature and wind chill drop to 15° F or when the temperature, with wind chill, is 20° F and there is an accompanying meteorological event such as rain or snow. DC Water reports an emergency water outage in the following areas due to a 12 inch water main break: 1800 block of Upshur Street NW, 4200 block of Argyle Terrace NW, and the 4200 block of Mathewson Drive NW. There are 400 homes and 2 fire hydrants impacted. Restoration time is estimated to be 8-10 hours.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for the District of Columbia, which is in effect from 10PM tonight until 11AM Monday, January 21, 2019. What: Very cold wind chills expected. Wind chills between 5 and 15 below zero expected. Additional Details: The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will combine to create low wind chills. Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if precautions are not taken. Make sure you wear a hat and gloves.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for the District of Columbia, which is in effect from 5AM to10AM this morning. Location: Shoreline in the District of Columbia. Tidal Departure: 1.5 to 2 feet above normal. Timing: Around the time of high tide. High tide at Washington Channel is 6:57 AM. Impacts: Shoreline inundation is expected along portions of the seawall adjacent to Ohio Drive and the Hains Point Loop Road, and near the Tidal Basin and Jefferson Memorial. Minor shoreline inundation up to one foot above ground is possible elsewhere. Precautionary/Preparedness Actions: A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
